I have implemented independent reading in my English classes (freshmen and AP juniors). My reading list includes the traditional cannon—Pride and Prejudice, Grapes of Wrath, The Great Gatsby, Great Expectations to name a few—and more diverse books (many of these are on my shopping list) of literary merit that represent the school's population. The school has collections of the the classics but the newer, more diverse works are more difficult for us to access. This project would allow me to lend students books that will expand their ideas of what literature is and will help them see value in their own stories.
