Learning through doing is best practice for students in kindergarten to third grade. That is especially true when teaching math. Using just paper and pencil is too abstract for most students, whereas my friends need more in order to properly learn. Students need to touch the concrete representation to build their number sense and fluency. With the tools being asked for, my students will be able to better understand the process, rather then memorizing the steps. The students I work with struggle to learn within the classroom, so they come to me for specialized instruction. The manipulatives being requested will go a long way to help my students.
