During the 20-21 school year, my first-grade students missed a lot of opportunities for hands-on learning and word building in Kindergarten due to distance learning or hybrid learning. Due to COVID-19 protocols, these students never had the opportunity to work at centers or enjoy flexible seating in their classrooms. They were unable to work with partners or teams. My first graders are bright, capable, and creative—they deserve engaging activities that allow them multiple representations of the content standards they are working so hard to master. The kids will use our materials for many things: the phonics and word building centers will be used daily for all of the reading foundational skills standards in the CCSS that will build strong reading skills in my students and allow them to decode words and read for learning. Building words out of dough or stamping letters keeps this important word work engaging for students and allows them to practice learned skills while being creative. The math strategy boards will be used daily at our morning circle meeting to review our strategies learned to fluently add and subtract within 20 for Orders and Algebraic Thinking Common Core standards, such as 1.OA.C.6. Cushioned flexible seats will provide a comfortable area for my students to read their chosen books during reader's workshop, or sit comfortably while working on a center with their teammates.
