  • Hocus, Pocus, Focus

    I am eternally grateful for your support of my students. This year, I used fidget toys to help at-risk students focus on classroom and homework tasks. Being out of school for 2 years made it difficult for students to focus on simple assignments. At first, the fidget toys were playthings, but eventually, they were used only when concentration was broken. It was great to eventually see students independently decide when they needed to refocus on the task at hand. It was even more beneficial to see my students using the fidgets, not only in ELA but in other subjects.

Esperanza Rising was selected as our next unit, since it gives our students hope of the American Dream. Many of our students lack self-esteem and find it difficult to see a positive future. Most of our students are from low socio-economic backgrounds and this book will show students that despite negative experiences, they can still have a positive view of the world. In addition, the fidget toys will aid in helping my students focus, since they were out of the classroom for 18 months. Since students were out of the classroom for 18 months, they need fidget objects to help focus on new unit Esperanza Rising.

About my class
