Young students need to read daily to become better readers. Like sports and musical instruments, the more we work at something, the more we improve. This project is important to my students. All students are motivated to read when their teacher is excited, interesting book choices are presented to them, and they have an opportunity to preview and make their own choices based on interest and ability. Students who are excited about reading, who also have high quality, engaging books at their fingertips daily, will grow and develop as readers. Not only will putting engaging books in the hands of our students foster a love of reading for the present time, but for a lifetime. The literacy goals for my project includes short-term and long-term goals. My long-term goal is to foster a love of reading within my students that lasts a lifetime. My short-term goals include ensuring that our students have a chance to read multiple books at their reading level, to increase the volume of reading they are doing, to motivate students to spend more time at home reading daily, and to inspire students to talk more about books with their peers.
