In 2nd grade, the goal is to ensure that our students are able to read fluently for 3rd grade (when standardized tests begin). Right now, a majority of my students are learning how to identify their letters and letter sounds. Through various research, we know that our students learn the best through small group instruction and through a play-based and project-based line of inquiry. The manipulatives will be supportive to my students who are learning basic CVC words and soon will learn CVCV patterns. The magic board will help with continued practice (if I can build it, I can write, if I can write it, I can read it!) of identifying the CVC words as well as handwriting practice (which is desperately needed during the pandemic). The special phones will help with practicing and saying the words. The letter mats for the magic boards will help in our handwriting and CVC reading and writing goals. The wobble stools will help with staying focused and engaged while working through our reading stations. We all learn differently and need different ways of being stimulated to focus and a texture, a movement, a chair can really help some of our youngest learners to focus. I once again would really appreciate any and all support I can receive for my 2nd graders. They are so inquisitive and are doing their absolute best, and I look forward to seeing them all reading by the end of the school year!
