Communication can happen through a variety of means ranging from verbal, gestural, signing, pictures, and communication devices. No matter the mode of communication, every student deserves to communicate with those in their environment. Many of these materials will help students to have hands-on experiences, use pictures to help them communicate, and have a variety of learning and play materials to help them learn. Fidgets and different toys are used to encourage students to use their communication skills, be used for reinforcement/motivation, and engage them while learning their skills. Storage helps to keep all the materials organized in easy-to-access ways.
Engaging all senses while learning helps greatly with the growth of skills.
These materials can be utilized with students at all different ability levels to communicate throughout the day their wants, needs, thoughts, and ideas. My students range from verbal to nonverbal which require different methods such as pictures to request, comment, ask and answer questions, and participate in activities throughout their day. Sometimes a student needs to hold something (for example a fidget) in order to focus on a task. These materials will be utilized to help students learn and better understand story elements, reading foundational skills, and comprehension that is in the Nevada Academic Content Standards. All students will be able to actively engage in reading and language activities by using different methods to ask and answer questions, understand a variety of types of stories, and aid in comprehension. Storage is also important to make materials easily accessible for any student that comes into my room. A new computer screen will help me be able to continue to utilize digital options, in-person students, as well as for my online students.
