Our middle school is mostly underprivileged, low socioeconomic students. As a way to encourage kids to enjoy learning and coming to school, the staff started clubs. Every teacher sponsors a club in which students sign up to participate. Before clubs began, the kids took a survey expressing which types of clubs they desired. A large number of the students requested "life skill" clubs such as sewing and cooking. I am teaching the sewing club. Currently, the 14 students in the sewing club are sharing 4 sewing machines. It is difficult to learn to sew with 3 or 4 students sharing each machine. Any additional machines will help get that ratio down. After seeing what the students are learning in this club, additional students have expressed an interest in it. These kids want to learn to sew so they can mend their clothes and personalize their outfits. They have also expressed a desire to make quilts for themselves and to give as gifts. This is such a worthwhile skill that the students can use throughout their lives. Not only is it a practical life skill, it is a skill that encourages and aids with math skills, reading skills, learning to follow step by step directions on patterns and creativity. Plus, the kids have something to show and be proud of at the end of each project.
