My 25 Gifted and talented students are finally back in the classroom after a year of virtual learning and are ready to get their hands dirty with dissecting. We will be doing a unit of study on owls where we will research and present on different owl species and their unique adaptations followed by a pellet dissection. The students actually "dig in" to an owl pellet to extract the bones of the prey they had for dinner. They identify and reconstruct these bones to recreate the Skelton of the rodent that was eaten! What a fabulous STEM activity. We will then study the human brain and its anatomy and functions. We will complement the study with the dissection of a sheep brain to identify the structure and parts of a brain and correlate it to their studies. We will then dissect a cow's eye to see the connection to the optic nerve and vision. We also will need the iPad to offer virtual dissection options provided my scientific apps. This option is important for students with allergies or an aversion to dissections. It is an exciting year in person, hands-on learning and we are ready to dig in and get our hands dirty!
