Mindful Moments: The Calm Down Crew
Funded Oct 20, 2024I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for your generous support of my DonorsChoose project, "Supporting Student Wellness." Your contributions have truly made a significant impact on the mental well-being of my students.
How We're Using the Resources:
The snacks, stickers, stress balls, and yoga bands you provided have become invaluable tools in our classroom. We've created a designated "Wellness Corner" where students can access these resources whenever they need a moment to de-stress. For example, during a particularly challenging week of standardized testing, students were able to utilize the yoga bands for quick stretches and the stress balls to release tension. The snacks provided a much-needed energy boost, and the stickers served as small reminders of positivity and encouragement. We've also used the yoga bands during mindfulness sessions, teaching the students breathing techniques, and simple stretches to calm their bodies and minds.
Student Reactions:
The students were absolutely thrilled when they saw the materials! Their faces lit up with excitement. The snacks were an instant hit, and the colorful stickers sparked creativity and joy. Many students immediately began exploring the stress balls and yoga bands, discovering new ways to relax and focus. The sheer volume of items created a feeling of being cared for and supported. They felt seen and valued.
Looking Ahead:
Your generosity has laid the foundation for ongoing mental health support in our classroom. Our next step is to integrate these resources into a larger project focused on emotional regulation and resilience. We are currently working on creating personalized "Wellness Toolkits" for each student. They will learn to identify their own stress triggers and choose the tools that work best for them. This project will empower them to take control of their mental well-being, both in and out of the classroom. We are also planning to create a student led "Wellness Wednesday" where the students will lead the class in a short mindfulness activity, stretching, or breathing exercise.

Funded Nov 5, 2021As the students began to enter the classroom, I was barely able to contain my excitement. The usual myriad of conversation seemed to die out for a moment... and then, in it's place, a resounding sound of awe erupted.
"Wow!"
"Can I sit here?"
"What are these for?"
"This is amazing!"
In the weeks since we've implemented the flexible seating, students have been excited to come to class. As a collaborative space, the bean bad seating has sparked the kind of discourse that can only arise from people who feel comfortable physically and mentally. The desk bands have allowed students who normally need to get up or take walks several times an hour stay at their desks and expend their extra energy without losing valuable class time.
I am so thankful for the donors that made this happen. Thank you for making a difference in our classroom!”
