These mask resources will be used in applying the elements & principles of design to design a unique mask. Students study Nick Cave's artwork which explores racial inequality. They look at various art styles. Students learn and apply many & varied techniques to solve design problems, such as the use of armatures to support lasting sturdy structures, appropriate clay that will be light enough and strong enough for practical use of the mask, texturizing techniques, painting techniques, and embellishment techniques. The E. Mask Project is one students especially look forward to. It is a wonderful outlet! Students design a unique mask after studying masks from different cultures as well as current artists. None are the same. All are unique. Students display their work for the whole school to enjoy and I often see groups of students at our display cases showing and looking at their peer's work.
