The vast majority of the students in my classrooms are from a lower socioeconomic impoverished neighborhoods who have had little exposure to a critical approach to history. Through our data driven meetings we have been able to ascertain that many students have fallen behind on their knowledge of historical events and their significance. This isn’t helped by the fact that a majority of the World History department is in the portables where there are no windows and a lot of noise from the P.E. Classes outside. The Bose speaker system will help elevate the listening capacity for an already over crowded classroom and the Light-strip will help illuminate the border of the whiteboard to bring some more light into the classroom. My students have experienced hardships and loss that many of us could never imagine, its important to focus on bringing positivity and light to their lives when we can. The community that many of these students come from was hit hardest during the housing collapse, and many of those families are still feeling the effects of the recovery. Top it off with a pandemic that has had a compounding impact of these student’s lives and they are caught in what seems like a bleak world. While world history is often perceived as the “boring” subject in school, I go out of my way to draw elaborate pictures on the white board for each lesson to inspire the kids to attention. I have decorated my darkly lit/ windowless portable on my own accord to give the students a sense of involvement from their teacher. Many of the resources asked for in this campaign are focused on the social-emotional well being of the students.
