I am requesting a variety of richly diverse novels. Without a doubt, real novels that represent minority students in a Title I school will foster an environment of inclusivity and reading in my classroom, and hopefully, our community, too. As an eighth grade English teacher to primarily minority students, I would like to provide richly diverse and culturally sensitive reading material for my students. The Nation's Report Card shows a staggering and very somber report for minority students' reading proficiency. For 8th grade minority students, 15% to 42% scored in reading proficiency. For so long, minority students have scored considerably lower in reading scores, that society has in many ways accepted this disparity. However, we can and must change this! Students WILL and DO read when they find that special novel that captures their heart and captivates their soul. Offering students a wide ranging array of genres, characters, and plots involving minority students that represent themselves will provide a much needed addition for my classroom library.
