My students have faced stress, anxiety, and strain on their mental health during the pandemic, and now they need guidance on how to deal with these new challenges. Reading a wide variety of quality literature and reflecting on the challenges that the characters face will help students grow, learn and know they aren't alone. These high-interest novels will inspire my students' love of reading as they build their social and emotional intelligence. Using high-interest literature at a variety of reading levels will allow students to select texts that are a perfect fit for them, and they'll be able to learn more about themselves and the real-world issues they face. One of the Nevada College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards (R.CCR.3) says that students in middle school need to be able to analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text. Using these novels and reflective journaling supplies students will be able to analyze the emotions of the characters they are reading about and also gain a greater understanding of their own feelings.
