As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I support students with a variety of communication abilities. Some of my students are verbal, others are not, and some have reduced intelligibility as a result of their disability. This year, I am supporting a classroom of students with verbal, visual, and physical impairments. I have had to be creative with taking materials I currently have and adapting them to fit their needs. I have also looked into implementing more technical ways for them to communicate such as the use of Recordable Answer Buzzers and a Handheld Communication Sound Device. My role as a Speech-Language Pathologist is to foster communication through any means possible. COVID has brought more challenges to overcome with the wearing of masks while trying to support their speech needs. One way that I found to be helpful is to utilize more visuals in my sessions. The products I have selected to create these visuals include- a color printer, cardstock, lamination sheets, binding discs to create books and mesh zip pouches to protect them so they can be used for years to come. The Large Mouth Puppet is an excellent way to show my students the placement of their mouths and tongues for certain sounds while keeping their masks on. The Novelty Whisper Phones help the students hear themselves better and make it easier for them to identify if they produced a sound correctly. Not being in a classroom or sitting in chairs regularly over the last year has proven to be difficult for some of my students. The fidget chair bands will help channel their energy while staying focused and increasing attention. These resources support Nevada Academic Content Standards such as (SL 3.3.4, L 3.1.1)
