  • Quarter Pipe for Bridges with Boards

    Funded Jan 24, 2023

On behalf of my students, I want to take this opportunity to offer heartfelt thanks for helping me make this wild dream a reality. You are literally making dreams come true and inspiring the next generation of skateboarders to learn all the life lessons skateboarding has taught us “old folks.” Thank you again!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Poage

  • Maus for Class

    Funded Feb 3, 2022

Thank you for making last year's student of Maus possible! This allowed students to study one of the darkest chapters in our history in a new way. This study also allowed students to research current events and topics such as Black Lives Matter in relation to The Holocaust.

Not only did students connect the book's content with the issues they see outside of class, but recent challenges about the book itself allowed for great discussion about why some books are challenged and if they should be removed from school. This made for great interdisciplinary studies with the help of colleagues in the social studies department.

These studies could not happen without your donations and for that, I thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Poage

  • Boards for Bridges with Boards

    Funded May 18, 2022

I cannot thank you enough for your generous donations to our after school skateboarding program! Because of your donations, students received boards, safety gear, and even started learning how to skate transition thanks to the ramp! This simply could not have happened without you!

Next week starts this year's Bridges with Boards, and students are already excited. In addition to learning how to skate in the parking lot at school, we will be taking periodic trips to the local skate park so students can apply what they have learned here and apply it to larger settings. The helmets and safety gear you donated will definitely come in handy!”

    With gratitude,

Skateboarding is no longer a "fringe" activity, and children (and adults) are finding the joy of "playing on a skateboard." It provides physical activity as well as transferable skills such as communication, problem solving, and goal setting. Skateboarding also provides a sense of community and helps build friendships that can last a lifetime. It is with that mindset that I chose to develop and supervise the Bridges with Boards activity as part of the Portsmouth (Ohio) City Schools After School Mall program. In an effort to build positive mentor/mentee relationships between the staff and the student body as well as the community at large, this program will teach children and teens the basics of skateboarding. To give these students ownership of the program, I would like to give each participant a skateboard of their own to learn on, enjoy, and take with them to skate outside of school, at the new skate park the city is building, for example. While a skateboard company (Cosmic Skates from Detroit, MI) gave me decks, I am requesting help with getting these students trucks and wheels to "finish" the boards for the students. While there is an associated Amazon shopping cart, in-kind donations of skateboard wheels, bearings, trucks, as well as safety equipment for the students to use while they skate. While I do have "loaner equipment," in the age of Covid, I would greatly prefer students using and keeping their own equipment instead of sharing.
