This group of students has a gap in their reading for knowledge construction and problem solving. They are in need of engaging opportunities to use their reading skills for something that they find valuable. I would like to provide a spark for them by letting them learn about history with exciting, interesting text, and teaching them to persevere and solve problems through coding robots. 21st Century Learning skills such as Real-World Problem Solving and Knowledge Construction require that students work hard to find a solution to a defined challenge, without being told how to solve it, and interpret, synthesize, evaluate or analyze information with time and effort. The products that I propose to buy will supplement my teaching in order to help students achieve these new skills. The robotics items will give students the opportunity to work on Program Development and Modularity standards (5.AP.PD.1-3 & 5.AP.M.1-2) as they come up with ideas to break their bigger problem down into smaller steps, test their solutions, and make changes as needed. The fiction and non-fiction texts will give students chances to learn about important people and events surrounding the American Revolution (SS.5.12 & SS.5.15-16), and read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension (RF.5.4), determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text (RI.5.4 & RL.5.4), and demonstrate what they have learned through reading as they quote accurately from a text (RI.5.1 & RL.5.1).
