The learning need that is being supported through this project is students’ emotional and mental well-being. COVID has impacted my students’ emotional and mental well-being as they navigate a difficult time in their lives. Through ceramic projects, students are addressing the standard, “VA:Cr2.8.1 Demonstrate willingness to experiment, innovate, and take risks to pursue ideas, forms, and meanings that emerge in the process of artmaking or designing.” Students will experiment with a new medium that they had not used before this school year and are taking risks as they try something new. Many of my students returned to school after COVID as apathetic young adults who were unwilling to take risks in the classroom. They are able to start taking risks as they start to understand the creative process through planning, creating, refining, and reflecting on their work. There are also many health benefits for ceramics. Studies show that ceramics is a creative outlet that increases optimistic outlook, improves focus, and reduces stress. It is a natural pain killer that captures memories and improves quality of life (Health Fitness Revolution, n.d.). Through this process, students' emotional and mental well-being are supported through this calming and creative outlet. Reference: Health Fitness Revolution. (n.d.).
