The 90s are back in style so I'm bringing back magnetic poetry for my students. During distance learning my students lost a lot of progress on spelling and vocabulary. For students, especially my English Language Learners, they lack the confidence to include challenging words which they know but can't spell. They are often too embarrassed to ask for the proper spelling in class and so they avoid using challenging words.
By using these magnetic words the students can move around those roadblocks and use words freely and creatively. Now that we are back in the classroom my students can use the magnetic boards and words to create poetry and stories as a creative challenge. The students also have a lot of energy so they can take their magnetic boards and move around or sit on the floor while they work.
This project will help students reach the following CCSS:
-W.7.3d: Use precise words and phrases, relevant descriptive details, and sensory language to capture the action and convey experiences and events.
-L.7.3: Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.
-L.7.3a: Choose language that expresses ideas precisely and concisely, recognizing and eliminating wordiness and redundancy.
- L.7.4d: Verify the preliminary determination of the meaning of a word or phrase (e.g., by checking the inferred meaning in context or in a dictionary)
-L.7.5: Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.
-L.7.5b: Use the relationship between particular words (e.g., synonym/antonym, analogy) to better understand each of the words.
