My students are growing up in a world full of technological advancements that push our young learners to think beyond simplistic matters. Computers allow my students to play games that further their learning and listen to stories that expand their creativity, but what about their mathematical and writing skills? My class currently uses white boards to complete their math and writing exercises, which assist me in viewing student thinking and helps me determine if I should re-teach topics in a different manner. Examples of such 1st grade activities include writing math equations and their corresponding pictures, sounding out words by letter sounds to create words, and practicing simple sentence structure. However, these white boards do not always prove successful as white board markers are easily able to dry out and their erasers constantly are lost or falling apart. In addition, dry erase markers and baby wipes to clean residue off of the white boards have become expensive to buy as a consistent purchase. Students in my class already complain about needing to use their whiteboards due to these reasons and are frustrated or bored of these mundane writing boards. Thus, the wonders of 21st century technology would help students maintain their focus during multiple subject areas. With the easy erase button of the writing tablets, students would be more willing to follow along with math and writing activities that promote participation. My students would also be thrilled to be utilizing technology in many areas of the class routine, helping conserve student attention spans. The following standard relates directly to my project: ELA.W.1.6 With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.
