Our students returned to school for full-time in-person instruction after spending much of the last year and a half learning from home via online learning. Students might struggle as they readjust to learning in the building, re-engaging with teachers and peers, and acclimating to the rules and structure in-person learning brings. As we know students have had an especially tough time coping emotionally when they are faced with change. For this reason, I am looking to create a space inside my classroom where kids can engage in mental health activities and decompress. In this area, kids can sit down on comfy chairs to read, color, talk about their feelings, etc. Games will be utilized to help students better identify their feelings and learn different ways to cope with those feelings. This space will be used by all students of the school who feel like they need a space to decompress and take a mental break. I want to incorporate a sensory wall with activities to help students to learn self-regulate when feeling overstimulated. All of these tools will help our students learn strategies to feel calm and get back to class where they can learn and behave to the best of their ability.
