My students come to me for both Visual Art and Robotics in our STEAM Charter school. I would like to expand the offerings of both programs by moving into options for both classes that include more hands-on projects and less screen time. While these projects are intended to take place in a face-to-face setting, students would potentially be able to use some of these materials for distance learning if needed. Art students are currently working almost exclusively in 2D media due to a lack of materials and equipment. The specific materials selected will allow students to move to 3D options including clay, cardboard sculpture with appropriate cutting tools, safety glasses and mats, and expand their drawing options using white media on black paper. Robotics students are focused on coding in a virtual environment, which is limited in hands-on applications. These students would expand their engineering options beyond virtual worlds by building models, developing prototypes and incorporating electronics into their program. They would be able to do this using the cutting tools (x-acto knives and wire cutters) and safety equipment (safety glasses and cutting mats) requested by this project.
