"What has happened to you?" that is the question we should be asking when a student displays undesirable behaviors. As teachers, we should understand that now, more than ever, our students need the skills and tools to cope with the daily challenges of life. Choices engages students in Social and Emotional Learning that will benefit them as they navigate high school. With SEL, lighting and learning environment play a key role in students comfort. For this, mood lighting will be used to foster an environment of comfort and learning. Each issue includes high-interest non fiction texts that students will use to acquire skills in all areas of life. Choices topic relates to the larger theme, and make connections. They’re also encouraged to draw connections between the articles and their own prior knowledge and experience, as well as the knowledge and experience of classmates, family, and friends through role-playing, discussion questions, personal observation, and independent research. (NVAC RI. 9-10.1, RI. 9-10.2, RI. 9-10.3) As students head back into the classroom, the need for these skills is becoming more apparent. Students are uninterested and lack the motivation to be engaged in their learning. As an educator, I believe with the right tools, we can teach students to be resilient, and develop the grit needed to be productive, successful young adults.
