Barista Cafe!
Funded Jan 26, 2023First, I would like to apologize for the lateness of our "Thank You" note. We had a death in our classroom family and it has been a little unnerving for us.
Second, my class has had an amazing year in our Cougar Cafe serving our staff and students our coffee blends and pastries. It has been such a wonderful learning experience for them. They have been learning customer service skills, maintenance skills, cooking and brewing skills and a variety of other life skills.
Lastly, with this experience this year, my students are skilled and prepared to apply for jobs this summer. They are so excited for their next step in life. This is all happening because of the generous donations we received from Donors Choose.”
With gratitude,

Funded Apr 19, 2022This project has been such an amazing experience for my students!! They have become much more confident within our school community. We are a self-contained class and my students do not have a lot of opportunities to "co-mingle" with the general education students and because of this, they feel they are not a part of the student body. This makes them feel left out and "not good enough". However, this project has jumped started their confidence because they have the opportunity to meet and greet their fellow classmates by serving them refreshments in our coffee cafe. They are being recognized throughout the school building. They are becoming more active in the their social lives and finding ways to connect what they are learning in the learning environment to our coffee cafe.
As the materials for our coffee cart arrived, my students would get excited, but I made them wait to open our materials until we received the last box! As they opened each box they were so surprised that everything was new and "real." Their wish for a coffee cart was coming true. The boys were so excited to put the carts together and the girls arranged how things would be stored on the coffee carts.
After opening everything, we designed out own logo for our business and planned our Grand Opening. We decided to make our grand opening on October 3rd and our shirts were pink (for Breast Cancer Awareness) and it had our logo on the front.
Everyone was so impressed with the design of our shirts, they asked if they could order them. So, this gave my students a new business venture...shirt making with our logo on it. My students have decided to sell the shirts during our coffee days along with our coffee and tea.
Life skills has become a real experience with for them. Our Cougar Cafe is our very own business. We take inventory, we order supplies, we have a business ledger that we record our debits and credits and we have to make arrangements to ensure we have the space reserved for our coffee cafe. We also do our own advertising for our business.
My students are so vested in our coffee cart, so much that we created our own coffee blend and sold it as a hot and cold beverage at our last coffee day. They are looking forward to our next coffee day!”
