5th graders come to my class for math and reading intervention. I try everyday to help my students develop a growth mindset and be bold enough to take risks and make mistakes. We have daily mental math activities where students use white boards to show me their thinking and try new ways to learn. My students have learned to celebrate mistakes so they can learn from them and grow. Our current white boards are well used and worn from years of creative thinking. Most boards are dark grey in color making it difficult to see any work. These new white boards, markers, and erasers would replace the worn out ones we are currently using and allow my students and I to once again have a bright place to show our work. By the time many of my students reach 5th grade most have read the few class sets of novels our school has. My students have read Bud, Not Buddy and really enjoyed the character of Bud and the very different time in which he lived. Elijah of Buxton is another great book by Christopher Paul Curtis that our school does not have and would provide a fresh experience in a very diverse time. This will be a great study for Black History Month. I love when students have never read a book before and get so into reading they hate to close the book. The books will be safely stored on the cart to rotate through our 3, 5th grade classrooms. Thank you so much for your willingness to be a part of educating and changing the lives of young people! I have the best job!
