The pandemic has affected all our students, particularly those living in poverty. My students in the self contained class lost their confidence, and their academic and social emotional well being was hit the hardest. One of the standards for ELA is R.F. 3.3 which is to know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. This is a very important skill for my students as they learn to read and achieve their goals. This is the reason why I would like to make task boxes and work stations to teach my students independence, responsibility and skill mastery. My students will be able to gain confidence as they complete the differentiated activities on their own! Most of the supplies needed are for production of the activities and organization as it will be easier for my students to learn the system. I will also use different drawers to match my students' ability levels. Even my non-verbal students can benefit through this project and gain confidence and independence while mastering the skills. For the past months, we have parents rolling up their sleeves and teaching their children with limited resources in their homes. The task boxes are not just for my classroom but can be sent home too to keep the students engaged with fun learning activities independently or with the support of their families. Introducing the task box system will need a lot of practice and reinforcements for my students. Coming from low income households, my students always ask for snacks for reinforcement. I want to provide snacks, bean bags, and sensory toys which they can use to improve their social emotional skills.
