Our students need to develop leadership skills to prepare them to have a voice in the real world. Leadership skills allow children to have control of their lives and the ability to make things happen. Students learn to solve problems creatively, become remodels and take responsibility for their own learning. Using a leadership program that guides students through each skill, and providing incentives (leadership tickets) for demonstrating these skills, helps students to build confidence. Giving students rewards for their efforts suggests that their hard work is appreciated. As adults we receive a paycheck for our hard work. Showing students that what they do is just as a important promotes feelings of pride and accomplishment. This is a powerful mindset to have in the classroom. Our school store provides an opportunity for students to spend their well earned leadership tickets, as well as, learn valuable business lessons. The store gives them their first real-world experiences with business operations, cash (ticket) exchanges and sales and savings for bigger ticket items (lunch with the principal, movie night, etc.). My goal is to provide this store every 1st and 3rd Friday of the Month and the big ticket items once a month. I ran the store for a first Friday and it was an overwhelming success and I have seen such growth in our students to demonstrate their leadership skills. I want this to be a year long success.
