A variety of Nevada Academic Content Standards would be covered by this international book project. Of course, all of the Reading Literature standards would be addressed, as the students would all be reading a literary work and using that novel to provide their own insights and analysis. However, the most important would be RL.7.10/RL.8.10, which calls for students to have a “Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity”. These novels would accomplish that standard without a doubt. This international book project would also support Social Studies standards that ask for student analysis. For example, SS.6-7.EWC.9 asks students to analyze multiple viewpoints, SS.6-8.WGGS.15 asks students to interpret cultural perspectives, and SS.6-8.EUSH.26 asks students assess the influence of culture in diverse groups. By reading novels that are also read currently within these different countries/cultures, students will be better able to provide analysis in their Social Studies classes from the work they do in their English class.
