Students who have choice regarding the literature they read and grapple with are more committed to their work and have more fun. My school has many classic canonical books available for students, but these books are not modern, high-interest books that my students might choose to read on their own. This project seeks to provide more diversity in my classroom library so that students can read and analyze books with high literary value which they might have picked up to read on their own. Students also have a faster and richer connection with a text when they relate to the protagonist or the author. To support students' social and emotional learning goals, this project will place books in my classroom with main characters that have much in common with my students, and who are grappling with conflicts that are relatable to my students. Finally, by placing 8-12 copies of these diverse books in my classroom, I can create book clubs for students who have been waiting to get back into the classroom with their peers to discuss literature, live life, and to grow, together.
