My students have expressed a deep interest in learning to play the ukulele in the music classroom. While they have seen me play my own personal ukulele for classroom lessons, our school currently does not have any ukuleles for students. Ukuleles are fantastic instruments for students in upper elementary (grades 3-5) to learn, as they help students develop fine motor skills while also supporting the acquisition of musical skills and concepts. Students will learn to strum chords, pluck individual notes, and learn to accompany themselves while singing. Researchers have noted that there is often a disconnect between music experienced at home and music experienced at school, and ukuleles are a great way to bridge the gap between home and school music! By learning to play the ukulele, students will be able to strum along to school-appropriate popular music and develop an awareness of the connections that occur between music experienced at home and at school. The music classroom will come to life with the incorporation of ukuleles, and I look forward to sharing this experience with my students.
