The Nevada Department of Education states “Computer Science is more than just computer programming. It is computational thinking, logical reasoning, critical thinking, and problem solving. These are tools our students need to be successful in the digital world they are now living in and the future that is to come.” I want to give my students the hands-on coding experience they deserve in order to meet the demands of the future economy. The Makey Makey kits will help each student to learn and refine their coding skills, regardless of their entry point. The amount of kits in my request will ensure that my students have enough materials to work on projects either individually or in socially distanced partners/groups. Makey Makey kits will allow my students to create open-ended projects that support student voice and choice, a growth mindset, and the development of critical thinking skills. The kits will support my STEM education and will increase access to STEM knowledge and awareness of STEM careers for my students from underrepresented groups. Students will see how they can CREATE with technology, not just consume. Computer Science Standards: 4.AP.PD.1 - Test and debug (identify and fix) errors in a program or algorithm to ensure it runs as intended. 4.AP.M.1 - Explore how complex tasks can be decomposed into simple tasks and how simple tasks can be composed into complex tasks. 4.AP.A.1 - Test, compare, and refine multiple algorithms for the same task and determine which is the most appropriate. 4.AP.C.1 - Develop programs that include sequences, events, loops, and conditionals. Computer Science Practices: P1.1, P2.1, P2.2, P2.3, P5.2, P6.2, P6.3
