  • Developmentally Appropriate Pizza Restaurant

    Funded Nov 6, 2023

The dramatic play area has been a new place of learning and interest in the classroom. The students are engaged in making pretend pizza, serving ice cream, and even some days making a pretend menu for the restaurant.

Additionally, the art supplies that we now have has given students the chance to use high quality fine tipped ones as well as yarns. The children are using the new colored tape to highlight or add to their existing creations.

The contributions to our classroom have been delightful and important to the children and their learning.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Matulich

This classroom project was brought to life by Nevada Department of Education.
  • Making Puzzles Making Pictures

    Funded May 27, 2022

The children love learning spacial awareness through making puzzles during math free time! Additionally the collaborative efforts that are required for the kids to do puzzles together is so awesome to witness. The books were were able to add with this donors choice project are big hits in the classroom.

These books are not just fo read aloud story time but also for the children to browse through as they begin to recognize the letter shapes and names.

Thank you for contributing to the growth and learning of the children . Sorry this letter is a little late!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Matulich

  • Blocks and Books

    Funded May 27, 2022

This year in Kindergarten the children have been building unique structures with the blocks and cubes that were purchased with this money.

The joy of learning during math building time is incredible to witness. Hands on math blocks and building ramps have made math fun, engaging, and developmentally appropriate this year at Tonopah Elementary School. I see future engineers and designers emerging from allowing these kids to have hands on building experiences.

Thank you for helping us get the this awesome block center.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Matulich

  • Feelings Vocabulary and Deep Breaths to Calm

    Funded Oct 5, 2021

The children in my class have learned so much about their feelings and emotions through the stories that we've read. We use the big book reader that was purchased by this project to read stories. The children have learned how to take deep breaths and how to calm themselves if they feel sad or angry.

Thank you so much for supporting this project.

The alphabet squares are also a great tool for the children to be able to learn their letter sounds and also to play with during their free time. The children need time to play everyday so they can process their feelings and emotions. We are so lucky to have donors like you supporting our classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Matulich

Having a feelings rug where children can be taught to take deep breaths will help align with the Nevada standard "Ensure safe and healthy in-person learning environments conducive to students’ social, emotional and academic development." Learning how to take a deep breath in kindergarten can mean the difference between a big upset or knowing how to handle stress. One of Nevada's core Social Emotional Competencies for children is "Self-management: The ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations. This includes managing stress, controlling impulses, motivating oneself, and setting and working toward achieving personal and academic goals." A feelings rug will provide the place to learn to name feelings and take deep breaths. The subscription to Let's Find Out Magazine by Scholastic will provide a regular non-fiction reading for the young children, thus meeting the ELA standards for kindergarten in multiple areas but specifically in Speaking and Listening/Comprehension and Collaboration. This magazine discusses varied social-emotional and health topics like hand washing, making friends, and how to be kind. These magazines are discussed with the whole class, then students engage in a short writing or reading activity in the magazine, and then the student can take it home to share with their families. NRS code 392.457 specifically states the importance of " Collaboration among parents, families, and schools to support learning by pupils and healthy development of pupils at home and school." This small magazine can be a bridge between home and school and carries positive messages of what is being learned at school. Optional is to use the magazine as an at home learning homework as it is focused and "doable". This connection between home and school strengthens social and emotional support of students in response to the effects of COVID.
