These supplies will help create an authentic learning experience for my students. I will use the STEM Challenge Hydroponics kit to immerse students in how technology can be used to improve plant yield. Once they understand the science behind hydroponics, they will start their choice of vegetable seedlings using the Desktop Hydroponics Kit, which will allow them to visualize both root grow and shoot growth of their vegetables as they break dormancy and mature. Lastly, students will move their mature seedlings to the Aquasprouts growth system until their vegetables are ready to harvest. The Aquasprouts system not only allows the automated growth of vegetables indoors, but it provides exposure to the concept of aquaculture, as the nutrient waste of the aquatic animals in the fish tank can be pumped back and recycled to help sustain the growth of their plants. Many inner city students have never experienced growing their own vegetables from seed to harvest. This project allows them to cultivate and provide long term care for a plant of their choice. Plants not only provide food, but they offer a calming presence to classroom and public spaces. Plants have been shown to decrease anxiety and provide a more positive and relaxing environment, which is ideal for the population of students at my school. By creating green classroom spaces, students can learn about sustainable practices for agriculture while being immersed in an environment that is beneficial to their emotional well being.
