The pandemic definitely changed the way that students learn and interact with each other. My vibrant theatre class is eager to learn skills such as sewing and painting that can be used not only in performances, but also apply to real life. These activities with the sewing machine, fabric, scissors, accessories, and other items also help to spark creativity and social-emotional learning, as they will work together in groups to plan and create physical manifestations of their imagination. I plan to teach students how to create their own fabric masks with basic sewing skills to match any costume, and then advanced students can move on to learning to sew clothing for costumes on a machine. The paint will be used to create beautiful and engaging backdrops for plays. Every theatre student loves to paint sets, but they need plenty of supplies to learn how to do it well and be able to make mistakes and still fix a flat and make it fit in a story. These projects meet the following Nevada Theatre standards: TH:Cr2.HS.2III Collaborate as a creative team to discover artistic solutions and make interpretive choices in a devised or scripted theatre work. TH:Cr2.HS.2II Cooperate as a creative team to make interpretive choices for a theatre work. TH:Pr5.HS.2II Apply technical elements and research to create a design that communicates the concept of a theatre production.
