A shared space between the library and social workers/school counselors offices is newly available. Until recently, students needing space to calm work on self-regulation would sit in the library. Upon the return to school from 1.5 years of disrupted schooling, the need for increased emotional support materials and space are apparent. This project is a collaborative effort between the library (to create a space with comfortable, flexible seating and fidget materials) and the social workers/school counselors (to provide a calming area with direct instruction for social emotional health). The Nevada Department of Education is in the process of aligning SEAD competencies and practices with academic content standards. The current statewide adoption of SEAD competencies can be found at Nevada Statewide Social and Emotional Competencies. The SEAD (Social, Emotional, and Academic Development) Competencies focus on Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making. This project will provide resources and materials for students to work on self-regulation and SEAD competencies in our newly renovated Sensory room staffed by our librarian, social workers, and school counselors. School disruption due to Covid brought about numerous deficiencies both academic and social-emotional in our students. The need for additional supports for anxiety, social awareness and self-management is apparent as students are returning to school full time. The requested items will provide comfortable and flexible seating for independent and small group activities and fidget materials for the students.
