Students with mobility or fine motor challenges will also have more opportunities and flexiblity to experience a pottery wheel using a table top Shimpo Aspire. This will allow students to plan and make multiple forms that explore a personally meaninful concept, idea or function (VA:Cr2.HS.III). The mobility of a tabletop pottery wheel could give students an opportunity to use the wheel in alternative settings such as outdoors or at home. These resources will give students of varying abilities an opportunity to try a traditional artistic practice (VA:Cr1.HS.2III). Finally, here is a reflection from a student from last year that explains how ceramics and the pottery wheel helped her social emotional health: "The benefits I found in making ceramics include relieving stress, learning to focus, and exercising creativity, as I learned to come up with an idea and execute it. Ceramics is a fun medium to work in, as it is very hands-on and responsive to the person wielding it. Ceramics has helped me work on my focusing skills, especially on the wheel, where I needed to perfect my stillness to keep my creations centered. Art in general inspires me to look into my emotions, as that is what motivates my creativity, finding symbols for how I am feeling and incorporating them into my pieces. Overall, art through ceramics has helped with my mental health and focus." (Carson High School student 2020-21 School Year)
