  • Alternative Seating for Active Minds and Energetic Students

    Funded Oct 10, 2021

    My students were so excited when they saw the alternative seating options. Some of them even came to class early to get their desired seat. The first few weeks there was a lot of turn-taking so that everyone had an opportunity to use one of our new seating options.

    Now that alternative seating has become part of our classroom environment, students know to use the seating as needed. Some gravitate toward the different seating options more than others and it is awesome to see them choose a seat where they can be successful. Many of my high-energy students have an easier time staying in one place when they can use one of these seating options because they allow them to move.

    Our class appreciates all of your generous donations. This project has positively impacted our classroom environment and allowed students to harness their energy. It has helped keep students engaged and supported them in their learning.”

My 6th graders are full of energy and incredibly active. Alternative seating will support them in harnessing their energy in a positive way. Many of them rock back and forth in their chairs or click pens because they have displaced energy. Alternative seating would provide a safer and less disruptive way for students to direct their energy. Alternative seating provides sensory input, comfort, and promotes movement. All of this works to create more focused and engaged learners. Having alternative seating options will also provide students with greater agency. They have a choice over their environment and can choose a seat where they can be successful. They can change how they are sitting and where they sit as they need. This small change to our classroom will immensely benefit the needs of my students.
