The majority of items I focused on are materials I can provide my students with to encourage a flexible approach to learning. One major hurdle my students are facing this school year is stamina - in terms of focusing their brain and keeping their bodies working for a 6 hour school day. With the wobble and floor cushions, along with the classroom rug and chair bands, I can give my students the opportunity to participate actively in the classroom through the use of flexible seating. By allowing my students the opportunity to wiggle around while still learning will allow more students to achieve at a higher level while also minimizing classroom interruptions. I would also like to put an emphasis on Social Emotional Learning. Interacting with others for half of their day has been a big learning curve, especially my first graders who are in school for the first time ever. I want to provide my students with the opportunity to use a calm-down corner where they can learn to confront and work through their emotions - something that will help them throughout their entire academic career. Lastly, I would like to invest in additional ELA and Math manipulatives/materials. Many of my students need tactile supports that the curriculum does not always provide, and with these materials I would be able to push my students to meet meet and exceed certain 1st grade standards or provide support to catch up on information lost from Kinder. The additional reading material would also allow me to expand my classroom library and provide additional multilingual support to my students who speak both Spanish and English! The donation to my project would allow me to support my students academically and emotionally. We can build foundational skills that will help them for years to come!
