As innately social creatures, my students thrive and grow when given the opportunity to share their ideas and opinions together, explore and analyze texts as a community, and critique their peer's writing in a workshop setting- reinforced by a conference table setting. All of this requires community-centered roundtable discussions and counters the isolation many of my students experienced and struggled with over the past two years. Socratic Seminars hit so many Nevada state standards, but a few of the main ones include: reading closely (RL 2-3), determining themes and central ideas (RL 4-6), while delineating and evaluating informational texts (RI-3,5,6,8). The roundtable community also supports the Nevada Writing standards for College and Career readiness by asking students to practice skills in developing arguments and their line of reasoning (W-1,2,), while producing clear and concise prose (W4-5). This project promotes these standards by providing a conference space for all of my students to attend seminars in a professional setting while analyzing professional writers and the writings of their peers. This project also fulfills COVID-related learning needs in my class because it helps reinforce community and communication, which many students lost during lockdown.
