As an occupational therapist, I have the opportunity to see students individually or for group therapy sessions to target their fine motor, visual motor and sensory processing skills, which helps to improve their performance in a variety of school tasks, such as handwriting, scissor use, opening their lunch packages, putting on and zipping their jacket, sitting still for circle time and so much more. I am seeking funds for sensory supports to improve participation and games, toys and activities to promote fine motor and visual motor skill development. I want my students to learn and grow through fun and engaging experiences that translate to usable skills in the classroom. I structure my time with students to focus on both on underlying skills and direct goal outcomes. For example, we may practice writing uppercase letters to target their handwriting goals and play "Scoop a Bug" sorting game with bubble tongs to strengthen their hands and fine motor skills for handwriting. Students who struggle with these skills may not be motivated to address their challenges in therapy if it is boring and repetitive, but finding a way to make sessions fun and interesting, while still improving their skills is what makes my job as an OT unique and essential. These materials will give me fun, new and interesting ways to challenge my students and improve their skills without even knowing they are working! After a year of online learning, students are lacking these skills, lacking confidence and struggling to engage in school. Help me support my growing caseload and help kids get back on track.
