A highlight in the instruction process in my art program is the introduction of ceramics. Teaching students how to use clay provides them with an opportunity to engage in a different realm of creation, improves their fine motor skills, and allows them to learn how to manipulate a different medium. The school's former kiln was removed because of damage. The kiln would provide us with the opportunity to explore and learn about this medium and grant them an opportunity to learn how to make everyday functional objects that can even be used at home. The students can experience the visual arts process of learning about historical works from the Greeks to the Japanese as well as Western artists. Additionally, as a STEAM Designated school my students would learn about firing, glazing, the physical and chemical properties and changes that occur in clay, and the firing process. Through the STEAM and Art Program, a specific set of lessons has been developed to accomplish the teaching and learning process through clay. Some of our planned projects are, but are not limited to: coil pots, vases, birds, animals, houses, relief portraits, and homage projects inspired by "The Dinner Party" by Judy Chicago.
The school's PTA program is willing to provide some funding for glazes, kiln shelves, and tools. We are in the process of having online art auctions of student artwork for fundraising. A new kiln for our Art Program would provide them with of a kind opportunity that they may never be able to experience in their lifetime. They are such amazing students and deserve to engage in learning through a well-rounded art education program and Ceramics is a must in this process! Please give my students an opportunity to experience the world!~
