The library has changed remarkably since when I was a kid. My high school library and local public libraries were the place to go when you needed to find a book to read or research materials. This is still true, of course. What has changed is the mode we are using to discover and enhance our information skills. Here, in the reinvention of information literacy and creative inquiry, libraries have adopted the Makerspace: a place where students can discover and hone skills in the physical world. The Makerspace allows students to read, learn, construct, devise, explore, and understand a world of creativity, technology, and inspiration. Our high school library Makerspace will have a strong focus on STEAM ideas and initiatives; we will have a workstation with outlets and USB ports, coding games, art supplies, electronic kits and components, as well as 3D printing supplies. Students will have the opportunity to explore these tools and materials outside their structured class time. Many students would not have access to this kind of learning experience if it were not for the Makerspaces in their schools and public libraries.
