These materials will make a difference in my students' learning by providing them with the unique ability to build an aquarium and a terrarium using plastic bottles and connecting them to create a freshwater pond ecosystem called an "ecocolumn." Students will observe the relationships between plants and animals and their dependence on one another. They will be able to observe how the living organisms of an ecosystem also depend on the nonliving parts, such as the plants needing water and sunlight in order to photosynthesize. Students will also learn and discover the carbon dioxide and oxygen exchange between plants and animals; learn about the energy roles that the living organisms play in an ecosystem, such as producer, consumer, and decomposer and how each organism's role is vital to the survival of the ecocolumn.
