Chevron: Now The Price Is Right for 4th Grade Science
Funded Oct 21, 2015The colorful, informative books about Wolves, Raccoons, Whales, Snowshoe Hares and Narwhals have arrived and I waited until my fourth graders came to the library so that I could open the boxes with them. We carefully took the books out of the boxes and examined all of them. The students were delighted to see all the new books. I immediately processed them and checked them out to eager readers.
As you can see from the pictures, the pallet of shelving also arrived and was delivered to the door of the library. I am working with our custodian to get it assembled because our district maintenance department says that it does not assemble shelving. I know that is a small road block. I am asking for volunteers from the community to help and soon the shelving will up and ready for the books.
Thank you for your support. You are awesome. You have made a difference in our library.”
With gratitude,
Ms. H.
We're Lost But Financial Literacy Can Help Us
Funded Oct 11, 2015It is a glorious day in the library. The 10 books simple math concept books and the storage/shelving unit have arrived and have been installed in a special financial literacy section. My students love looking at and reading Henry The Fourth, The Three Little Firefighters, Leaping Lizards, and Hoot: A Hide-and-Seek Book of Counting but their favorite book is Maisy's First Numbers. They enjoy looking for the patterns in the books. The teachers also love the books and have checked several out to use in classrooms.
The shelving is a wonderful addition to the library. It means that students can now find the books and materials they want in a timely fashion.
Again, thank you so very much for supporting this project.”

Ms. H.
Can't Find Our Books -- We Need Shelves to Get Organized
Funded Aug 21, 2015The shelving has finally arrived and I ran out to see the delivery truck when the office told me that it was here. The solitary delivery man brought the shelving into the building and stored it outside the library. I thanked him. Then he asked how long I had been the librarian at this school. I told him it was 17th years. He asked if he looked familiar and I asked if he had gone to school here. He said that he had and that he loved coming to the library. He was happy to see the library getting some new shelves because it sure needed them but he thought it looked like it needed more. I told him I would have to wait until I got more support from the wonderful donors at DonorsChoose.
I walked out of the building and thanked him again for delivering the shelving. Then I told the students, teachers, and administrators and they were all smiling by the end of the day because they were so happy. Our Administrative Assistant emailed our community and family members.
This new shelving means so much to my school community. Thank you again.”

Chevron: Third Grade Scientists Need Help with Critter Reports
Funded Sep 9, 2015Everything is beautiful in our library. The twenty-four terrific books about arctic animals have arrived and my third graders could not wait to get their hands on them. They love the colorful illustrations and the "just right" texts that are packed with information. I know that their first scientific reports about animals are going to be wonderful because their resources are accessible and interesting.
The shelving also arrived and I am working with the day custodian to assemble the shelves. It is going to be such a wonderful addition to our library. Students will be able to find the materials they need.
I love working in the library. I love helping kids find the materials they need and want to be successful. I cannot tell you how grateful I am for your support.”

Create a Library Maker Space for Military Kids
Funded Aug 21, 2015The 6 LEGO kits, tiles and bases, 2 LEGO character sets; 14 books about creativity including the Lego Ideas book; and storage/shelving units have all finally arrived. The books and LEGOs before the end of October but the shelving/storage just arrived.
The Library Creative Maker Space has been housed on a table in the library and it has been very popular with all my K-6 students. They love working with the LEGOs and there is a long wait list to check out the books. I have noticed a new spirit of cooperation as kids share ideas and encourage each other to build new things.
I am working with our custodian to assemble the shelving/storage unit and I know that it is going to make things so much easier when kids can store their materials and projects on the shelves.
Thank you for helping my students use their imaginations in the library.”

Ms. H.
Building Something Wonderful (With Gingerbread?)
Funded Oct 30, 2015My students were so delighted and touched that someone that didn't even know them was interested in their education. They could not imagine that someone cared about them. They were delighted as the boxes started arriving. Each day was like a birthday celebration.
I can't thank you enough for your wonderful donation. It made it possible for me to get the materials I need to help my students. Right now we are reading the folktales and the stories about different gingerbread characters. Soon we will begin to study buildings and construction. Next month, we will draw and plan our houses in preparation for our culminating project—the Gingerbread Houses!
Over 60% of my students qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch but we are not a Title I school. This means that we do not have special funding and support from our school district. We often do not have the funds for frills like extra resources or new books on special topics.
Thank you, thank you, thank you--- I cannot write those words enough times. I am so grateful for your donation and support of my children. I know that your help with this project will have a lasting impact on their lives.”
With gratitude,
Ms. H.

Funded Oct 17, 2015The building materials (aka frosting, candy, and cereal), the books about architecture and construction and the 4 folktale books have arrived. My students are so excited.
As soon as we opened the boxes, we inventoried the building materials. I put a price on each item and we discussed the cost of different things.
Next we started reading about the Three Little Pigs. My first graders studied the pictures of the different type of houses constructed by the pigs. Soon they will be looking at different houses from all over the world.
I am delighted that my students have learned so much about money, cost, and housing. In December, we will be building our houses.
Thank you for making this wonderful experience possible for my students.”

Funded May 27, 2015Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! The books about plants and the environment, the fantastic indoor garden kits, planting materials and cool microscopes have arrived. If you heard a noise, it was not a sonic boom. It was my kids cheering and clapping.
As expected all this terrific science stuff is a hit! My students are starved for science. With your donation, we were able to add a whole bunch of wonderful titles. The books are centered on such interesting topics and all my students were thrilled to see all the new covers and the colorful pictures. As an educator, it is a great feeling to see a student pick up a book on rocks, or another want to read about worms and ladybugs because she wants to see them grow one day. We are all very thankful for your donation and I am thrilled to have such wonderful non-fiction books in our library for many years to come!
We have put the plant stands together and we are beginning to study plants. This is so exciting. The students are so very interested in learning all that they can. One of them said that he wants a forest in his room. And on another note, the other teachers are jealous so we are working out a way so that the entire school can take part in our project.
It just goes to show that sometimes a little thing (like a donation) can have a big impact. Thank you again.”
With gratitude,
Ms. H.

Funded May 7, 2015My fifth graders were enthusiastic when they heard our project was funded. The blender, the books, the yogurt maker arrived and they were delighted. Then when the refrigerator arrived, their jaws dropped. They could not believe that you would donate that refrigerator to their project. "Boy that is a big refrigerator!"
We have made yogurt. We have tried smoothie recipes. We are learning about healthy snacks, food preparation and safe food handling. Soon, we will be learning about ethnic cooking.
My students come from all walks of life; many are the children of deployed military personnel. Some are in foster care, some live in shelters and they all struggle with incredible handicaps. They need to learn how to care for themselves. Cooking is one way to help. Cooking combines math, science and health. It is practical in the real world. My students love it.”

Funded Aug 22, 2015At the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year I know that I should have been excited and hopeful but instead I was wondering how to make my budget stretch just a little bit further. In the past fifteen years my budget has stayed exactly the same and the needs of my students have increased dramatically. Every year, I struggle to provide resources for my students and every year, I feel that I am failing them. Then when I found out I was going to work with 3 small groups of RTI students, I was really depressed.
I have to tell you that the magazines are arriving and they are awesome. My students ask every day when they come to library if the new ones have arrived and they are crushed when they have to wait just one more day.
The magazines come and we look at the cover, we look at the pictures, we read the captions and we make predictions. Then we devour the articles.
I am so happy to see what the magazines are doing for my students. They are beginning to think of themselves as readers. Their teachers tell me that they are volunteering to give answers in the classroom.
Things have changed. They have changed because of your donation.
Thank you.”
With gratitude,
Ms. H.
