  • Looking Toward Helpers and Heroes not the Haters

    Funded Dec 29, 2012

I am the librarian at a small public school. My school serves a diverse population of just about 400 students. Many of my second grade students are reluctant readers and do not currently read at their grade level. These students may not readily check out a regular library book about a topic like helpers in my community but they listen to a story and discuss the book especially if the book has interesting pictures.

Your generous donation enabled me to purchase 12 books about helpers and protectors as well as five copies of Bullying in Schools. We desperately needed these books. I started using them just as soon as the box arrived and they have been a wonderful addition to our library. I have had amazing success using these books as a discussion starter.

Thank you so much for your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. H.

  • Let's Talk: Books to Help Kids Learn Coping Skills

    Funded Nov 27, 2012

It was a wonderful day when I came to school and learned that the books you helped to purchase had arrived. The day got even better when the students arrived. They were so very excited when I told them that the 22 books for our project had arrived. The excitement continued as I gradually opened the box and put the books out on the tables.

I cannot thank you enough for the books your generous donations provided for my students. We have gained so much as readers and thinkers having these books available at our fingertips. While other teachers have to dig through piles of books hoping to find a title on a specific topic, I can go to the shelf and find just the right book and be ready to teach in less than a minute.

We love our new books! They are helping us deal with tough topics like bullies, divorce, death, moving and loss.

Thank you again for your generosity and support. It is going to be a much better year thanks to all of you.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. H.

  • Helping The Children Of Deployed Military Personnel

    Funded Dec 13, 2012

Waaaahooo! The books arrived and we had to open the box immediately. I just wish you could have seen the students. I am happy to say that the books got checked out just as soon as I could process them and there is now a waiting list for all of them.

We are using the lessons in Bullying in the Schools as the basis of our class discussions and it is helping students to learn how to deal with bullies on the playground.

I want to thank each and everyone of you for your support. I especially want to thank those of you who had to endure the begging and posting of updates about the status of this project. Without your support that would still be going on!

Thank you very much for your donations. The students and I appreciate your thoughts and kindness.”

  • No Bullies Allowed: Developing Girl Power

    Funded Dec 21, 2012

My third grade girls adore the books by Gail Gibbons. When the box arrived with all the books, they were amazed that one girl author had written so many books on so many different topics.

My students were falling behind in math, science and reading and they were teased because they did not know anything. Many of the girls had even stopped trying but that has changed. The books have sparked an interest in learning. I am using the lessons in Bullying in Schools to start discussions about the harmful nature of teasing. I wish that you could experience the joy I feel when I work with my students.

Thank you for your support of my students and this project.”

  • Defeating Bullies with a Reading Circle for Girls

    Funded Dec 4, 2012

The box with the 53 books and 5 copies of Bullying in the Schools arrived, we opened it and the girls could not wait to read them. We immediately started with some lessons from the wonderful resource on bullying. Next, we processed the books and started the reading club. By doing both the lessons and the reading, we have started to make progress. The reading circle has been a great way to promote understanding and respect. My fourth grade girls are finding a safe space to interact. The reading circle group for girls is the place where they can improve their reading and social skills and as they begin to know one another, they are becoming more tolerant and understanding. On behalf of my students, thank you for these wonderful resources.”

  • We Have Listening Ears but we Need MP3 Players

    Funded Nov 19, 2012

Let me begin by saying how very thankful I am for your support of this project.

As the librarian at a small, urban elementary school with a significant number of military dependents, I struggle to provide learning opportunities for all my students. My school is an old school and has limited resources. Although many of my students have limited access to technology, they are still expected to be successful readers, writers, and producers of presentations.

When I requested the MP3 players I had no idea how much of difference they would make. We are learning how to use the players so students can listen to stories during their daily reading intervention time. It is exciting to see my students listening to stories and developing their vocabulary, reading, and listening skills.

Thank you for giving me the tools to help my struggling readers.”

  • Celebrating Thanksgiving Together by Reading and Researching

    Funded Nov 19, 2012

The 25 terrific books about Thanksgiving and the fall holidays have arrived and my 3rd graders are delighted with them. I am so very thankful that you decided to support this project with your donation.

Many of my students have recently arrived in this country. They are having trouble fitting in because they cannot understand America. They needed to learn about American traditions and celebrations. At the beginning of this school year, my third grade students did not have many opportunities to actually work together on meaningful projects. Now, they are using the books and the Internet to research and write reports. I wish you could see the learning that is taking place in my library.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generous donation to my library. The new books are doing so much to support and develop student literacy. Getting new books that interest students is the first step in developing lifelong learners! We are making progress thanks to you!”

  • Common Ground: Learning About History And Stopping Bullies

    Funded Nov 13, 2012

Thank you so much for your generous donation of books to our library. The 35 terrific books have arrived. I cataloged them immediately and I cannot keep them on the shelves. My fourth graders are so excited to be part of a reading/discussion club which features the Who Would Not Want to Know books. They are learning about so many topics and they just cannot wait to share what they have learned with their peers. It is wonderful to see their enthusiasm. Their self esteem grows everyday.

The books for this project were selected to address the twin problems of bullying and lack of understanding of human conflict. We work on the lessons in Bullying in Schools and then we share one of the books. Your donation has made such a difference in our class. I cannot thank you enough for your support.”

  • Help My Boys Find Books To Read

    Funded Nov 5, 2012

My third graders represent the very best in America but many do not have the funds for school supplies or recreational reading materials. These students deserve a chance and your donation to our project has given them that chance. When the books arrived, we started our reading/discussion club. First, we read a lesson from Bullying in Schools and discuss it. Then we share a book from Alien Eraser series, or Hank Zipper, or the Daredevil Desperadoes of Destiny or (my favorite) Lunch lady and the Bake sale Bandit. We read, we laugh, we talk and we are getting to know one another. We are becoming a family of readers.

Many of these male students are reluctant readers who read way below their grade level and are teased because of their poor skills. The new books which you helped to purchase and put in the hands of my students are helping to improve morale and self-esteem. My students have begun to share the books with other students. It is amazing to see the change.

Thank you so very much for helping us.”

  • My Guys Really Need New Books

    Funded Nov 1, 2012

My students were delighted when they learned that our project was funded but that was nothing compared to their emotions when the book box arrived. We opened the box to discover forty fabulous series books. The paperback covers were so enticing. They were colorful, graphic, sometimes gory and just what the guys wanted. They were snapped up by my third graders. I cannot tell you the excitement that these new books generated. Who could resist reading about Dinosaur Cove mysteries, Humphrey the Hamster, The Stone Rabbit series or the Roscoe Riley Rules series?

I cannot thank you enough for choosing to support this project. We alternate a lesson from Bullying in Schools and shared reading where one of the boys gets to read or talk about a part of his book that he really liked.

These books are like potato chips, you cannot stop at one, you have to keep going. They are a wonderful addition to our library. My nonreaders are turning into readers all because of your donation. We are learning to read and discuss and we are learning about each other. We are becoming a team.”

    Ms. H.
