My students are each unique in so many ways. Each child is confined to their home due to intense medical factors. COVID has had such a huge impact on them because teachers and therapists that once visited regularly are no longer allowed to enter their homes. Switch toys are specially adapted toys that are activated when a special button is plugged into the device and the slightest pressure is applied to the colorful round switch. With the use of a variety of these valuable learning tools, the activities my students participate in are much more engaging. My lessons are all individualized by each child's IEP personal goals. A majority of my students have a goal to engage or interact with the environment around them with the use of cause and effect devices. My students especially enjoy items that light up, play music or provide sensory input. The simple pleasure of interacting with a toy that can be controlled with a switch gives my students the ability to have a little bit of control of something in their world. I regularly deliver items to my students’ doorsteps to enrich their learning so that they have the opportunity to experience what we often take for granted. Switch toys can be life changing for these special students. Once a child realizes that he/she can activate a toy with a simple touch of a button, it opens up a whole new world. This skill can be enhanced by using a communication device to allow the students to voice his/her needs.
