I want to create an art room that is warm, inviting, and a safe space for students to take risks. My students deserve a classroom filled with materials and possibilities. My hope is that students will learn about themselves and others in my art classroom through observation, analysis, research, exploration, and the creation of visual art. The broader goal will be to learn to think like artists, and the plan is to create a variety of artwork that expresses students’ identities, feelings, and ideas. Art brings us together and art teaches us empathy and that is what we all need right now. Students will use watercolor and tempera paint, brushes, and paper to explore color theory, and how color is used to express emotion, ideas, and information in our culture as well as others. They will learn techniques to create texture in their paintings using oil pastels and resist techniques. The Sharpie pens will help my older and more detailed students emphasize smaller parts of their work. Colored pencils and markers will be used daily for drawing and illustrating, as well as planning, and creativity exercises.
