Kindergarten music is all about exposing students to the basics of music, and building a solid foundation for the coming years to learn more about music. It is a year to capture their love for music and have lots of fun and experience many different instruments, games, and songs!
All of these instruments help teach students the basics of music, while letting them experience it first hand!
Rhythm sticks are basic rhythm instruments that are easy to transport (which is important as I am on a cart) and easy to use (as I am teaching kindergarteners). They can be used for many different rhythmic concepts (ie: basic rhythmic patterns of quarter notes and paired eighth notes and steady beat). They are also easy to use, as students can easily tap them together, air tap, or do different motions to the steady beat.
The Rhythm Band Step Bells C-C Diatonic is a basic pitched percussion instrument that allows young students to visually see when pitches are going higher (stepping up the xylophone) and when they are going lower (stepping down the xylophone). This is a very important concept for young students to learn, as they begin to differentiate between high and low, and going higher and getting lower. The visual connection to sound helps them grasp this concept faster.
Boomwhackers are simple pitched percussion instruments that allow students to hear individual notes. These instruments also allow students to play simple melodies, but only have to focus on one note at a time, which is great for kindergarteners, as they don't have to try and read a whole song, but watch and play only their colored note, as each boomwhacker note has an assigned color, that coincides with solfege and note names. They are easy instruments to teach basic note reading.
