  • Bare Necessities

    Funded Aug 10, 2023

I wanted to thank you for your donation to my classroom project. My students and I are truly grateful for the resources your donation helped to provide. My students have enjoyed the various board games and have really taken an interest in teaching eachother how to play chess. They get quite competitive!

Some of the other items they have particularly enjoyed include the mini dry erase board erasers and playground toys. There have been some intense wiffle ball games happening at recess time.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Walsh

  • Representation Matters

    Funded Aug 2, 2023

I wanted to take the time to thank you for your kindness shown to me and my students through your donation to my project. Your donation goes far beyond just books and supplies. It truly leaves a lasting impact on students through the stories read and topics discussed in class.

Students oftentimes do not enjoy reading or reading class because they cannot see themselves in the stories they are being required to read. By stocking my classroom with novel sets that include representation of diverse characters, you have helped multiple students feel seen and valued through these authors' voices.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Walsh

  • Scoping Out the World

    Funded Nov 5, 2022

The Scope magazine subscription has been a great addition to my classroom curriculum. My students and I have particularly enjoyed the reader's theater selections in each edition.

We typically do novel studies, and I supplement with paired passages that are related in topic or theme to tie in with our current novel. The ability to search the Scope Scholastics website for past issues by topic is a fantastic resource to help find materials related to our current content being covered with our novel study.”

  • Novel Studies Are Fun!

    Funded Mar 9, 2022

I want to thank you for your generous donation to my classrooms and my students. We are so grateful for people like you who see how important education is and support students and their education.

One of my favorite things to do with my students is teach whole-class novel studies. Through your donation, I was able to update my selections for this year and teach two new novels "Touching Spirit Bear" and "Hoot." We use novel studies to explore ideas such as theme, mood, figurative language, and also use them to guide our writing. I was able to add several new novels to my classroom library as well for students to check out and read on their own.

Thank you again for your kindness and generosity towards my students and me.”

  • Reimagine Reading. Reimagine the World.

    Funded Oct 5, 2021

Thank you again for your kindness shown to my students and to me. It is nice to know there are still kind people out in the world that want to see students succeed and enjoy learning. Through your donation, I was able to create literature circles relating to our main text. Through these literature circles, students were able to explore themes further that were prevalent in the whole-class novel we were reading. The exploration of these topics brought about some very in-depth and interesting conversations between students in class as they discussed the themes further. Their curiosity was definitely piqued. I believe my students have really taken to reading for pleasure instead of just confining it to the classroom. This was my hope all along when I posted the project on Donors Choose.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Walsh

I am wanting to implement more book club type lessons in my classroom. Several students reading related texts will conference and discuss common themes and ideas from the books they are reading. I am also building in time each day for sustained silent reading to improve students' access to quality literary texts. By providing them with current and high interest book selections, I am hoping to spur a movement of reading is both learning and entertaining. My goal is to get students selecting their own books to read and continuing on the practice of sustained silent reading into their lives outside of school as well. I want them to reimagine what reading is and in turn, reimagine the world around them.
