Our students are from all backgrounds and most likely have not had a continuous place to feel safe and comforted in their lives. The way that they're learning to regulate themselves and their emotions is by taking breaks to calm down so that they can return to class with their peers. When you're young and you have been through trauma in your life, it can feel like everything is the end of the world. I would love to make these kids feel comfortable and safe with their teachers and peers. I chose the area rug, table and bean bags specifically because they would do so well with an area of their own to take a break, learn to calm down on their own and approach us staff later on to talk about what they just went through. I also chose the stress balls because having a healthy outlet for frustration is key.
